Rebecca Lolosoli is the recipient of the Vital Voices 2010 Fern Holland Global Leadership Award. The Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards honor and celebrate women leaders who are working to strengthen democracy, increase economic opportunity and protect human rights around the world. Throughout her life, Rebecca would witness the violence that stemmed from certain practices of her Samburu culture sometimes in her own home, at the hands of her own family. She stood up in front of the village elders and asked that they put an end to violent customs and that they provide protection to women who had endured domestic abuse and rape. Rebecca raised her voice so loudly that she was beaten for it. Her in-laws decided she was an embarrassment, and everyone around her tried to silence her appeals; to remind her of her place. In the end, she decided to leave violence behind and to seek out a better life. With fifteen other women survivors from her area in the Samburu region of northern Kenya, she formed a new village; a womens village, a safe haven for women fleeing violence or persecution. They called this village Umoja, which means unity.

Panmela Castro is the recipient of the 2010 Vital Voices Global Leadership Award for Human Rights. The Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards honor and celebrate women leaders who are working to strengthen democracy, increase economic opportunity and protect human rights around the world. In 2006, the first and only law was passed in Brazil to affirm every womans right to live free of domestic violence. Named for Maria da Penha who had been beaten so severely by her husband that she is now paralyzed, this law is a quantum leap forward in a country with a long history of violence in the home. Even so, too many women remained uninformed about the law and didnt understand how to access its protections. A law that isnt known has the same impact as no law at all. Panmela felt compelled to take Marias story into the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Along with other young women artists, musicians, and producers, she formed Artefeito to educate and inform women of their rights under the law. At workshops throughout the favelas, these women come together to beautify their communities with murals that serve as a constant reminder of the safety and security that every woman deserves.

Su último disco "Of Monarchs and Beggars" es un autentico trallazo de rock 'n' roll clasicote con aires roots, aqui podemos hablar de semejanzas entre Black Crowes o los primeros Aerosmith. Estos muchachos se forman en San Diego en el otoño de 2003 y hacen rock clásico, lo que se traduce en la mayoría de las ocasiones en hard setentero (no voy a mencionar a los Crowes aunque es facil irse a ellos, y sí mencionar a la fuente, Faces, Free, T Rex, Zeppelin,...). Comienzan teloneando a los Jimmy Eat World y tras conseguir buenas criticas (NME), comienzan a grabar un disco autoproducido en los estudios (Studio B) recién construidos de su bajista, Shaun Cornell. Ryan Koontz a las voces, Nathan Beale y Mark Murino a las guitarras y Chris Mendez-Vanacore a la batería completan la formación. Melodías hard rockeras, baladas setenteras y un guiño al country con Isabel componen su disco ...Of Monarchs and Beggars, un festival de guitarras poderosas y ritmos contundentes. El 17 de septiembre ganaron en los San Diego Music Awards el galardón al mejor grupo de rock.
