The Edmonton Oilers, fresh off their fourth Stanley Cup victory in five years, signed a deal that sent Wayne Gretzky, a Canadian national treasure and the greatest hockey player ever to play the game, to the Los Angeles Kings in a multi-player, multi-million dollar deal. As bewildered Oiler fans struggled to make sense of the unthinkable, fans in Los Angeles were rushing to purchase season tickets at a rate so fast it overwhelmed the Kings box office. Overnight, a franchise largely overlooked in its 21-year existence was suddenly playing to sellout crowds and standing ovations, and a league often relegated to "little brother" status exploded from 21 teams to 30 in less than a decade. Acclaimed director Peter Berg presents the captivating story of the trade that knocked the wind out of an entire country, and placed a star-studded city right at the humble feet of a 27-year-old kid, known simply as "The Great One."

Neko Case singing This Tornado Loves You at Bumbershoot in Seattle on September 4, 2010. She dedicated the song to her missing three-legged cat, Wayne, who she is afraid got eaten by a coyote. She said he got his name because one of his legs was stepped in by a cow, but he'd use it as sort of a hockey stick, like Wayne Gretzky. Poor kitty.

I had the pleasure of spending one season doing color commentary with long time friend Fred Salas covering the Fog in Bakersfield. I did 20 games including 2 playoff games. We were doing radio and they allowed us to call the action for this video like a simulcast. This Fog team was coached by Keith Gretzky Waynes brother. This game was played in the old Bakerfield Convention Center before the new arena was built. The camera work is shaky because this was filmed by workers at the arena and not cameramen. This was only my 2nd year of doing sports on tv so I was a work in progress. This was the third season of the teams existence. Game was played Jan 18, 1997. Final in this game was 5-3 Gulls.

Wayne Gretzky became the NHL's all-time leading point scorer on Oct. 16, 1989, and in incredible Gretzky style. He did it in his old stomping grounds, Edmonton's Northland Coliseum, with a goal that tied the game in the last minute of regulation play. And then he put an exclamation mark on the record with the game-winning goal in overtime. Other clips on Youtube show the SportsChannel America coverage or the local Los Angeles Kings broadcast. For the first time on Youtube, here is how it was called by Bruce Buchanan and Harry Neale on ITV for Wayne's former fans in Edmonton and the surrounding region.
